TV Time: Backyard Boho Bash on Marilyn

I was very excited to return to 299 Queen Street the other week when I paid a visit to The Marilyn Denis Show.

I hadn’t done TV in a really long time (since I was pregnant with my now 1.5 year olds!) but it was great to work with the whole production team again and see Ms. Denis herself of course!

I presented decor and recipe ideas for a backyard bohoemian party, inspired by the gorgeous summer weather and the popular as ever music festivals that have reinvigorated the boho spirit in those born after 1980! (Coachella anyone?)

Because I’m pretty much the opposite of laid back, sourcing for the vignette was a fun way to step out of my personal comfort zone. My producer Wendy and I decided we would go the sophisticated route and create less of a hippie caught in a rainbow haze vibe and do more of a grown up chic flower child look.

I chose mostly neutral items with plenty of natural textures like olive wood, rope and linen, and accented only with bright hits of turquoise. These Carmelo dishes from Pier1 were perfect thanks to their hand-glazed feel in an outdoor-friendly material. You have to pick them up and tap them to realize they’re melamine.

These hobnail acrylic glasses from West Elm are also a great example of outdoor-friendly dinnerware that is pretty enough to use indoors. The faint hint of aqua and the folksy dot pattern added the perfect touch of whimsy to the table.

After channeling my inner boho babe, I got to dive right back into Jessica Waks territory by presenting some tasty recipes inspired by the outdoors. I love to host and entertain, so coming up with recipe and presentation ideas is never a stretch for me. I presented crudites with green goddess dressing, caprese stacks with basil pesto and rosemary lemon olives – delish!

If you missed the segment, please check it out on marilyn.ca, where you can also find all of the recipes.  Thanks to the suppliers who kindly lent me their wares to showcase, including Pier1, IKEA, West Elm and Crate and Barrel.
