Artist Project ’16 Picks
I was very happy to return to the opening of The Artist Project last night. Sourcing art for clients is one of my favourite things and I love meeting the artists and seeing so many different types of pieces all under one roof. This blog post would have taken me days to put together if I were to share all of the pieces I loved, so here are some highlights:
Adrienne Jackson, Mushroom Cloud, 30×30, $1,350.00
There were so many gorgeous abstract pieces at the show that I fell in love with but this is one of my favourites for its palette of pink, gold, black and white.
Samantha Sandbrook, I*heart* Graffiti: Romeo and Juliet- love story, $4950
This large heart-shaped piece is definitely a showstopper, due to its unusual shape and large scale. And can we talk about that soft blush colour? I can picture this oil and resin heart hung in a loft with all white furniture. It’s romantic and whimsical in an edgy way.
Russna Kaur, The Water Fountain, 20×25, $250
This composition of paint, paper, string, oil pastel and pencil is so lovely and imaginative and can we talk about how she framed it with the purple mat? So chic!
Patrick Lajoie, Ice Time (edition of 7), 40×40, $1500
I love the iconic Canadian scene of a game of outdoor hockey, but done in a modern textural way on a birch panel. Seeing the wood grain behind it makes it extra appropriate for a modern abode belonging to an athlete or even in a well-heeled man cave.
Erin Rothstein, Tasting Room: Pineapple, 28×28 framed print (edition of 100), $650
Erin is crazy talented with her ‘so lifelike you could eat them off the canvas’ depictions of food. Pineapples are very trendy right now in interiors, so this affordable print is an especially timely choice. Her smaller originals, including graphite sketches of Hershey kisses on mylar, are amazing bang for your buck, so you must stop by her booth!
Julie Hawkins, Seeing Stars, 72×40, $3400
I had been admiring Julie’s work on Instagram so it was great to meet her in person and see the pieces up close. This large abstract appealed to me with its beautiful purples, blues and black and white- I could totally design a room around this piece!
Dani Cooperman, Push 1 (edition of 36), 20×20, $450
Dani has a great eye for capturing urban scenes and interpreting them in a new way. Her backlit panels are so striking but what I loved most were a photo series of graffiti and other urban textures. In simple gallery frames, they bring colour and grit to an interior.
Honourable mentions go to photographer Jordan Nahmias’ charming toy series, Adi Zur’s mixed media pieces, and Noella Noel’s lush abstracts. If you’re looking for a piece or want some visual inspiration, you can check out the show until Sunday at the Better Living Centre.
